All you're doing is increasing the wear= and tear on the piano and your joints. Hammer technique is a= lot of medium to medium + key strokes with small pin movement. = Big pitch changes will not respond to heavy pounding, i.e. you= won't get stability just because of pounding. I do have a= knocker I made by gluing two bass hammers together. I can hold= it with several different ways to reduce any repetitive= strain...I use this whenever I feel the need for a change. = That's another big secret...do piano work different ways. = Tuning left handed is a great way to do that...I haven't been= able to make that leap yet. One way I've been able to reduce pounding damage is by learning= to tune with my opposite hand: not only does it reduce stress on= my limbs but it also increases my tuning speed so that I don't= have to shift position at either end of a grand; I just switch= hands if I need to. I've also gotten a more ergonomic tuning= lever. Even by doing that I still feel discomfort in my hands,= especially after a heavy day of tuning. If anyone has any= suggestions, a brand name to try or if it's better to see a= specialist about this sort of thing, I eagerly await your post.
