Yes, the 1" belt sander works. So does a dremmel with a round sanding drum on it, with a careful touch. A flat file, about an inch wide, can work to trim and notch. Use your grinding wheel to remove all of the roughness from one of the thin sides (edge?) of the file, then you can use it at and near the notch without fear of cutting where you don't want to cut.
