Bridge Capping Materials: Ebony?

What about locust ( "Ironwood" ) I think it is harder
and heavier than ebony, as is guava. Amazing stuff! A
twig of guava weighs almost as if it were cast iron. I
have always wondered about the bridges on early-mid 
19th century pianos. They are often quitte narrow, yet
have no cracks, to this day.
