I find that it helps to focus on the pitch of the beating note by briefly playing the note whose fundamental is the coincident partial. For example, in listening for the beat in the major third, C3-E3, the coincident partial is E5. So first play E5 all by itself and memorize that pitch. Then play the C3-E3 major third, listening for the memorized pitch. That will be the beat. Robert Scott Ypsilanti, Michigan
