I have never understood the reason for the capstan
angle on older Steinways. If anything, it seems to me
that the angle is in the wrong direction. If I wanted
to design a minimum slip contact between the wippen
heel and the capstan, I would angle the capstan so
that the tangent to the top surface of the capstan is
aligned with the line connecting the wippen flange
center and the pivot of the key stick. I think Ron
Overs uses something like that in his action.

Can anyone give me the patent number for that Steinway
patent? Maybe I can find an explanation there.
