Yes. You can change leverage, and weights of 
various parts can be adjusted.  Friction needs to
be controlled.

I started by reading David Stanwood's articles.

I also ordered reprints of all his journal articles 
directly from him for a modest fee.  In addition 
I read his patents which are available online from 
the U.S. Patent office (these are tougher going 
than the articles as they are written in patent-ese).
