Broken Upright Back Check Wires

I try, Joe. But tell me, what's wrong with putting upright back check wires 
into the end grain of a dowel? Philistine that I am, I'd do just that and 
soak in some thin CA afterwards to petrify the dowel. Someone could 
probably dig that piano up 10,000 years from now and find nothing but a 
handful of petrified dowels (still in pretty god shape) with a hole full of 
rust in each.
