Ed - I'm not usually an "Amener", but that's about what I felt reading the final comment of your last post (below). The conflicting characteristics of high pin torque and lack of bearing-point friction, (even apart from any unsupported distance of string coil from top of block) describe what has been my experience of the recent production of the well known unbushed brand, as well as one of its upright relatives. In fact, one of the disconcerting sensations of a pin contacting the plate is that you are prevented from employing the subtle, "flex" tuning you describe.
