Mark,
Abandon ye all thoughts of profit who enter here. My recommendation is to do
everthing. All new action parts, if they are available, rebuild the old ones
if not. (new felts, repin, replace silk cords etc.)
Replace the board and the block using the book in one hand tool in the other
method. you can get a board pre-crowned from Pianotek for somewhere in the
neighborhood of $2500.00 you send the old one and the new one comes back
ready to install with the bridges recapped. They have a video on how to do
this. Bring in a more experienced tech to help with setting the bearing,
planing the bridge top and drilling pinning and notching. but if you want to
do it yourself thats good too. My first bridge cap was a three time deal.
This whole ball of wax approach will teach you more about the piano, its
structure, the function of the parts and everything else. There is no more
valuable learning experience and it will give you insight that will carry
over to other aspects of your work and allow you to make informed decisions
regarding your customers pianos. Depending on your available time and
dedication this project can take about a year or sometimes more. Buy the
Journal Reprint kits from PTG I find them more usefull for shop work as they
are right there and can be refernced immediately without having to turn on
the computer. These are invaluable. Call everybody when you need help or
e-mail them (slightly less intrusive) most folks are glad to be of service.
This is a great chance to spread your wings, expand your horizons and bring
your skill leavel to whole new heights. Have fun, Keep the list posted on
your progress.
Good Luck
Michael
