Good for you john, if you can get it. I just know several "seasoned" full-time top-line techs who are around $120-130. You probably experience your share of the following phone inquiry reactions: "Thanks, I'll call you back", and never do because they can and WILL find plenty of high quality technicians who charge a more "reasonable" rate. I can tell you that I get plenty of work year round, along with tons of referrals and so on. This is not only because I'm good, but because I am charging a reasonable rate. My typical first time call results in $300-500 in work, on average, consisting of Pitch raise and tuning, full cleaning and maybe file and shaping, along with various other stuff the piano might need in the way of repairs, both minor and major. Several over the $150 you mention. I myself have only been at this for 3 years and am already thinking I'm not charging enough at $120. Briefcase ] I know a LOT of RPTs in the los angeles area, but not a single one who charges $150 for just a tuning! The average TOP fee is around $120-130 max. Of course that does not include pitch work or anything else. Excuse me, brother, but you’re out of your ever-lovin’ mind not to charge for the pitch raise; forget about the “time;” think about 1. The tremendous wear on your body, and 2. The expertise needed to accomplish 2 quick raises, putting your hammer on every note, then a fine tuning. Are you nuts? Here’s what my charge would be (remember, I get top dollar in a major urban area): 2 pitch raises @ 75.00 150.00 Tune A440 150.00 Total _____ $300.00 That’s hard, hard work, and I want and deserve to get PAID for hard work. With all due respect, Robin, you should take a look at what you’re giving away. The true payoff IS the beauty you create and enable, and the possibility of inspiring a child; that said, your type of expertise, in any other realm, would be much more expensive. Hope this helps..... David Andersen _______________________________________________ pianotech list info: https://www.moypiano.com/resources/#archives ood
