The one exception was years ago when I was experimenting with brushing strike points with a wire brush. I didn't consult with the owner beforehand nor mention it afterward (she wasn't at home), but I sure got an earful that evening about how I had ruined the tone quality of her harsh-sounding, unevenly-voiced Yamaha P2 (obviously not her opinion). I didn't bother telling her that it would brighten back up in short order, but I never heard from her again. Just as well, IMO. But lesson learned: always discuss the condition of the piano, suggest possible improvements and come to an agreement before doing any work.
