would like to get some expert opinion on how to

replace a hitch pin in a vertical piano that is broken

off flush with the plate.  Can this be done safely

without removing the plate?  Restringing is not

otherwise required nor desired. >>

There are several way to approach it.  
1.  Drill a new hole and install a new hitch pin farther back
2.  Double up on an existing pin, there is usually something nearby that will 
carry two strings, 
3.  Hammer the old pin through and re-use the hole, you may need to put a few 
strands of thin copper wire in the hole to keep the new pin tight.
