They simply sponsored a study done by the MTNA. The comparison was between all new pianos of any quality and used pianos of 30 years or older. The findings pointed to a greater rate of success for students who started out on presumably functional instruments. Of course that was the result that they were looking for so that they could subsequently use that claim in advertising and sales literature.
