Beating unisons are apparently louder (and quieter) than clean ones, so I
suppose a very slow beating unison will have a perceived "loud" peak over
the duration of tone as the two wavelengths converge..

A favourite album of mine features Ellis Marsalis on piano; a couple of very
loose unisons on an otherwise pretty clean
tuning do not detract from my enjoyment; I rather like the innocent quality
it seems to convey
