I have a scaling "program" on a spread sheet. Right now it is getting updated in Excel but I also used it in Quatro Pro, and MS Works in W95. It computes tension from length diameter and pitch. If you have Excel I can email out the spreadsheet. For bass strings I am considering 3 methods, McFerrin, Fenner, (I think) and weight of the actual string. Inharmonicity formulas are a snap with spreadsheets. Just tell me which one to enter although I am not sold on the idea of tweeking iH just from math formulas. As far as inharmonicity in bass strings I will be happy to use any formula suggested. I am skeptical that iH can be computed for bass strings. I think it more practical to make a string and then measure its iH. But measuring iH can be disappointing in some tuning programs, and I have never heard, "this is the best machine to measure iH. You inquired about Winscale and P-Scale. I have not used them and wondering of they have the capability to compute tension of bass string from different gauges of copper winding? I know this is not precise because more wire can be wrapped depending on how hard the winder pulls on the winding wire. -----Original Message----- From: pianotech-bounces@ptg.org [mailto:pianotech-bounces@ptg.org] On Behalf Of clarks11628@juno.com Sent: Sunday, March 21, 2004 12:14 PM To: pianotech@ptg.org Subject: Scaling Programs Hello, All! I would like your input on Scaling Programs available. Has anybody used Winscale? I know that P-Scale seems to be used widely (?), and would like to hear comments on the effectiveness, ease of understanding, pre-requisites for effective use, etc. I am in the process of doing more re-whatevering than before, and am not satisfied anymore with just re-doing whatever I find there. After using Arledge's bass strings a few times, and seeing the results, I would like to understand what to do with the whole instrument. Anyone care to comment, please?
