David, The next time you have the opportunity to look at a really olde Grand and/or Piano/Forte, pay attention to the string spacing. Even tho, most of these pianos were about the same size as a modern grand, they often had fewer keys. Hence, wider string spacing, which possibly, would give the capability to shift to just one string. Also, the hammers were smaller, in overall general dimensions. So, again, the possibility for shifting to one or two stings was possible. Bottom line: They didn't CRAM everything into a too small case, but let the intended function dictate the size of the case.
