Here's a quick trick that often works for "thudding" bass strings.  Drop the
tension a lot - maybe a quarter turn of the tuning pin.  Play the note five
or six times, loudly (not too fast though; don't want to break strings).
Now, bring it back up to pitch.  You may notice a big improvement from
getting the crud out of the windings.
