>I have rethought putting the wire through the beckett and bending it. I am >not going to put in the extra bend. Most folks don't, and I didn't either for a number of years. >I used to curse the Baldwins that had it. When a string broke, I was >guaranteed, to have my blood showing. Likewise. How many of your own replacement strings have broken and needed to be replaced? >Thinking back to '75, when I started, I can only think of a couple of times >a beckett slipped, and that was on a new piano, where not enough length was >in the hole. If the wire is bent at right angles, and goes fully through the >hole, I have never had one slip. I haven't seen all that many either. The other reasons I listed are the my main reasons for taking this approach. >I think the reason that Baldwin had for doing it, was that the wires were >pre-cut, so it was a manufacturing choice for speed, not to make sure it >didn't slip. >Regards, > >John M. Ross According to Baldwin folks I've talked to, that's correct. I'm not trying to convert anyone here. I've just offered the reasons that I do it. No two techs on the planet live in the same world, so there are going to be different priorities, dictating different approaches. Ron N
