I don't know what you're working with, but if your stock isn't too thin,
I find biscuit joining a better alternative.

I've seen two methods of doweling a butt joint.  One is to drill
diagonally
from one piece to the other and insert the dowel, the other is to drill
straight down the through the seam so that 1/2 the circumference of the
dowel is located on each piece.  Which is better?
