Brighten old strings

"How do you brighten up old steel strings?"

Either with an abrasive eraser (I have also heard steel wool or the new
synthetic abrasive pads work well) or replace with new steel.

"And how about old, dark wound strings?"

Replace with new shiny copper-covered strings. I do not believe there is any
good way to clean up an old wound string.
