This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ---------------------- multipart/alternative attachment greetings all - well, when all was said and done, my boss required me to lacquer the darn things. "gospelizing" is what they call it down here in the deep south and it makes me just ill. it's the difference between voicing the hammers/performing a "power regulation" to just make the piano louder and more powerful, and basically making them glass-breakingly bright and yech-y. someone mentioned that the gospel churches should mic and eq the pianos better, which in a perfect world of logic and common sense is all fine and good, but past experience in pro audio AND pianos just proves otherwise. nuh-uh, doesn't happen. i do NOT approve, but it's one of those situations where the man with the check wins. however, what i did was barely lacquered them with a very weak solution - 11:1, which brightened them a bit, and this was after fine-filing and ironing and low-shoulder needling. then i found out after the fact that the piano wasn't even SOLD yet, it was only being CONSIDERED!!!! GRRRRR!!!! heh, in the end though, the guy considering the piano liked it, but preferred a more expensive RX1, and bought that, so there ya go. after all of this, my next project was to tackle an EX that was sounding just - horrendous. bright and uneven as hell. why? hmmmmm, because someone LACQUERED THE FREAKING HAMMERS!!!! so much so that there is no amount of filing or needling that will help them or even the tone at all. so now they have to order me a new set of hammers to hang. *smug grin* thanks again for the help everyone. still not happy about that GE20, ilex -----Original Message----- From: Alpha88x@aol.com [mailto:Alpha88x@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, August 22, 2004 10:56 PM To: pianotech@ptg.org Subject: Re: lacquering hammers Greetings, Why laquer hammers when over time, the hammers harden, by playing?
