bass hammers sound "tubby" when played

Julia,
That is more likely to be the strings.  There is a discussion further back 
in the archives about removing the strings, wrapping them about a glass 
coke bottle to break the crud and washing them with acetone/or 
other.  General consensus was that for a permanent fix, new strings last 
longer.
