Guys and gals... Really, this is a nasty proceedure no matter which way you run it. Acetone can cause all kinds of ugly things if its spilled... and the fumes .... so if you are doing the wash for heavens sake take the action to the shop and leave all windows, doors and ventilations open, remove the hammer rail and isolate the thing from anything that could possibly be damaged. Heck... if its a sunny day do the wash outside on a sawhorse bench or something. Let it dry a couple days and pinch with your fingers to see what kind of give you have managed.... guard yourself a little with whatever you can do to assert some (but not too much) softening effect before taking the thing back to the little old lady, who no doubt has high hopes and expectations. Personally... I veer away from this kind of treatment... I mean really... if the hammers are so laquered to begin with then they are already ruined and its better to just change the darn things and start from scratch. If the customer doesnt want to spring for the money then I let the next guy do the job. Been there, done that, hope I never get that hungry again. Apprapo voicing... I am off to Amsterdam next week for some hands on, one on one with Andre'.... nice new fine hammers on a decent piano.... one of Europes best and most renown voicing and tone building specialists to provide me with guidance, advice, and feedback.... what a long path back to my acetone washing days.... grin. I'm gonna have a great time !
