Your theory is flawed! I've been preaching tuning to pitch for years. I know
from personal experience with Bird-Cage pianos, etc., that the closer you
get to pitch the tighter the pin gets! This is because the tension "cants"
the tuning pin in the hole.
However, if there was a lot of rust/corrosion, you probably did the right
thing. <G>
