Mickey,

The Stringer I purchased has been well worth it. It also doubles as a 
lid prop for those vertical pianos where the lid has the hinges on 
the left side. I use two rubber caps from upright top lid supports 
(Schaff, #560, p107) for each end.

My experience with a curtain rod proved to be unsatisfactory.
