This would be true if you view ET as THE standard.  If you're always
trying for a equal temperament, yes, it would be detrimental because it
would not be equal.

I would not say "detrimental," but deliberately "different." It's the
different "effect" that is desirable by some. When it is a deliberate
alteration, it is not detrimental but a reasoned alternative.

It's kind of like ice cream. There are many flavors besides just plain
vanilla. :-)
