In that case, be prepared to start hearing some "clicking" sounds in the
action caused by the hardening of this material.  This was a common
problem with these pianos.  The black dust shouldn't be of concern and
can probably be vacuumed out, but it is a sign of problems yet to come.
Perhaps they are already there.  You can read further about it in the

Hey guy!

           Yes, you are right on the money! It was a 70's Baldwin and
the black stuff was in the "fibers" of the "leather" as well as the
catches.
