Piano moving /lyre attached

Greetings Hazen. Your question regarding detaching the lyre before moving a
grand intrigues me. In my piano moving days I would have been severely
reprimanded for not removing the lyre FIRST. In those days we took the lyre
off first because my partner would physically hold up the left corner of the
grand while I removed the left leg. We then dropped the piano slowly down
onto the skid. Any loss of grip with the lyre still attached- although this
never occurred- would mean that the piano would come down heavy on the lyre
with the obvious implications (big repair bill to foot, lots of explaining
to do, etc!). Even in later times when we used a jack to hold the piano up,
and fitted the skid straight onto the long side, the lyre still came off
first. It's just safer that way. Hope this helps! Peter
