IMMHO, it is not an actual increase in the other senses, but rather an 
increased use/dependence on them.

When you really concentrate trying to remember something, do you close your 
eyes?  Why?  Less input to the brain?? ;-}

If you are having a hard time hearing beats whilst tuning, do you close 
your eyes??  Why?

Does your hearing suddenly get better?  I doubt it.  You have eliminated 
the distraction of the constant visual input.  You are then more likely to 
be listening than just hearing.
