Alan; I agree with Wim's comments... the lower nut doesn't just fall all on its own. :-( For extra insurance, other than making sure both nuts on the stop rail are snug..the suggestions about "galling" the threads will work. For the head repair...make sure the broken pieces will go back together smoothly and then use 'gel' type CA glue with kicker...results in a stronger joint than the original shank... :-) My thoughts.
