Brian,

Here's what I found for music wire:
"To find the gauge number of the string, take the micrometer reading, 
subract .oo5 and divide it by 2. Or: to dind the diameter of the 
string, multiply the gauge number by 2 and add .005."
(A Guide To Restringing by John W. Travis, page 36)

This formula seems to work for center pins with the exception I used 
.010 instead of .005.
