We made a guide to hold a small die grinder and a grinding stone dressed to
the shape of the rod.  The cast ground out easily, but prepare extra stones.
The groove was shallow, just enough to keep the rod in place at the desired
dimension.  I don't have the records here, but I think we removed 1/16" from
the capo bar to get it clean, then ground a 1/16" deep groove for the rod.
Some sanding took down the sharp edges.
