This past weekend I had the pleasure of returning to my Alma Matre High School, Battle Creek, Michigan, and playing the piano in a 19 piece big band composed of other alumni, dating from 1968 back to 1944. I graduated in the class of 1955. The band was the featured act in a 3 hour show produced by the high school on both Friday and Saturday evenings, made up of high school students, chorus line and all. Dick Day, a tuner/technician from Marshall, Michigan, was the lead alto sax man and directed the band which played two of his arrangements "Satin Doll" and "Peter Gun" The piano was a Steinway D, SN293528, 1938. I had played this piano many times while in high school, however, this time when I first sat down to play it was obvious it had been rebuilt very recently, and by whom I don't know, but they did a magnificant job. Absolutely beautiful and the stage crew even wore gloves while pushing the piano into position on the stage and would not let the case be touched with a bare hand. It has an deep ebony finish and glistened in the lights. The only possible negative point, that both Dick and I noticed, was that the action was a slight bit sluggish, but none the less this beauty did sing. What a thrill . . like this one are far and few between. Just thought I'd share the experience. Regards, Gordon Holley, Goshen, Indiana Associate Member, Indiana Chapter 467 - Tuner/Technician
