I have had back trouble also and the root cause for me was weak hamstring muscles. Apparently most back problems occur because the myriad of muscles that support the back get weak and then something like a disc goes. But the real source is the musculature. I got a book at our local health food store and I will get you the name of it, but basically every day I do 15-20 minutes of what amounts to yoga stretching exercises for my back. I am short, and pulling actions out of 9 foot grands is always a potential back-breaker for me, so if I don't do the exercises, I feel it. Don't get surgery! Get a second opinion and/or get physical therapy or see a chiropractor before they cut you up. Just making sure.
