Years ago I screwed a Hale oblong tip onto a square adaptor. I use my standard tuning hammer and #2 tip and move the adaptor from pin to pin as I tune. Not having the oblong tip directly on the hammer means I can position the hammer as freely as on a piano with square tuning pins. The only disadvantage is that the hammer tends to fall off when I let go of it. The adaptor/oblong tip combination takes up very little space in my kit, so it is always at hand when needed (unless I overlooked taking it out of the last square I tuned). And it will fit those oblong headed screws used to hold the action in place. Looking in the Schaff catalog, I was appalled not to see oblong tips listed among those available for their hammers. Then I looked on P.46 and found #24 Oblong Tuning Lever Tip, a one-piece thingee that does what my combination does, all in one! Priced at $12.35.
