Tool Tip: I took an old pair of needle nose pliers, ground about 1/2" off the nose so I had some meat to work with. Then I opened them wide, and ground out a little bit on the inside so it looks like a crab pincer. Sharpen it a little, and voila!! This bites into the old elbow and slices it close to the wippen, instead of crunching it. This tool works especially well when the old elbow isn't quite brittle. I haven't been brave enough to try the heating trick, but since it worked for you, I may try it next time.
