Hi Gordon, This tool is used for final mating of string and hammer after the strings have been leveled in a grand and the hammers reshaped. When doing work on an upright I will try to mate the hammer to the string first by seating the string with my brass seating rod and if that does not work I will use the fitting block. Between the two one can eliminate a lot of wierd noise in the low tenor notes of an upright.
