Specifically, I check/adjust at the breaks and when the string type (or number per note) changes. Also, I only tune wound strings by ear. <snip> How far back do you go to smooth out that change? At the break, you run into a problem and have to adjust a note. In that completed octave, there is a smaller, or larger 1/2 step, with all the ramifications to go along with that. Do you go back and recalculate the whole octave, or what?
