Montal and 'moyen'

    Are you familiar with Claude Montal and his book of 1836
_L'Art d'accorder soi-meme son piano_

It seems he refers to Equal Temperament using 'moyen' which in
French to English dictionary gives "average".  What is the French
term for "equal temperament" and  what does his use of moyen
really convey?  If you need the sentence it is used I can dig it
