Grand Muffler Rail

Terry,

I don't know about aftermarket, but I recently saw one on a used (gray market?) Yamaha grand. This was in a dealer's showroom; he thought it was original. It was operated by a pull handle under the left side of the keybed. When disengaged, the rail is behind the hammers with felt extending upwards towards the strings. When engaged, the rail pivots up and forward (towards the pianist), interposing the felt between the hammers and the strings. It looked like it was coming out from under the damper guide rail. Must have been a pain to engineer, install, and regulate - there isn't a whole lot of extra space back there.

hope this helps,

Mike Spalding RPT
