I should say that I am almost done with a whole new set of charts that will
replace those ones. Commentary is added on each chart, mostly excerpted from
Jorgensen, but I also have commentary from Coleman, Bailey, Wendell, and
Bremmer on their respective temperaments. And Jorgensen has contributed his
own idealized version of Kirnberger and Prinz. And instead of having to
download a whole honking PDF file, you ought to be able to click and review
pretty easily. Temperaments are grouped by type, and the year of each is
displayed. Best of all, the charts now show TRIADS -- for example, in the C
column it displays the C Major triad, showing the CG fifth, CE M3, and EG m3
all together, both cents and beats -- so you can examine proportional beat
rates in the triads. This is an important area for investigation: when the
m3 and M3 beat rates are synchronous, that may make the chord especially ...
meaningful? pleasing? sonorous? ... special?

I will announce here when the site is refreshed. Expect it within a month or
so. (I have a fulltime day job as a training manager at Washington Mutual
Bank.)

The single chart of EBVT that Bill has placed on his website is an example
of an early prototype of the new charts.

In the meantime, I am pleased that people are referring to my earlier
charts. Enjoy.

I'd second what Ed wrote about the Moore being a good "intro" HT. Check out
Jason Kanter's site (www.rollingball.com) for graphical representations.
Print out a few and share them with the pianist, allow him to have a hand in
picking, that way he's involved in the process. For a start, I wouldn't
recommend exceeding 18-19 cents from pure on any of the major thirds.
(usually the F#, in the middle of the graph) The Rousseau equal beating is
also a good choice, having a little more variation from key to key. I
almost think of the Moore as an "inverted meantone" because of the way the
graph looks, with the flat top, representing all those intervals place the
same distance from pure.

good luck!

Ron Koval
