This is a failing of their first piano teacher and every teacher thereafter.
Any student who eats chicken or even chips and then plays any piano has NO
respect for the piano. University teachers should be telling students of
this problem and requiring handwashing. The worst case of no respect for
the piano is the guy who puts the burned marks on the case where the
cigarette burned up onto the case. As a technician, I allow no person in my
presence to put cigarette, drink, anything that could spill into the piano
on a piano or organ. If the customer is insulted, I tell them how much it
costs to have the repairs done. I suggest the drink go on the floor next to
a bench leg and if they are still insulted, then that's their problem.

Amen. The local University here just invested in 1.5
million in new Steinways, and a multi-million$
building to put them in. In almost no time the keys,
desks, key-covers, etc. were smeared with slimy,
stinky ooze. One fabulously talented Asian girl would
take in a bucket of chicken, eat with fingers, then
play without washing ( all Liszt's Hungarian
Rhapsodies, one after the other!). Really greased 'em
up good!
I'm not a staff tech at the U, but I politely
suggested signs asking students to wash hands before
playing, and was told that they could not do this as
it would "offend the students" Sheesh! With such
"manners" why are they even in college, playing on
Steinways? Wouldn't 1st grade and Schoenhuts be more
appropriate?
There is far more to being an artist than mere
technical ability.
