David,

For me it is much easier to not come back and do another step in the process, i.e slice the excess of the top of the button.  There is no doubt in my mind that get a better glue joint with cloth over the top of the button.  The cloth is glued on the top and sides of the mortice.  The overlap is the thickness of the caul.  This is like what you find on a Kawai.
