key bushings

I use the Spurlock system for key bushings. I have been cutting the center rail bushing cloth flush with the top of the key button. My recollection is that the Spurlock instructions indicate that you can do it either way. I'm always interested in a better way. Exactly what is it you find better about having the bend than not. Thanks so very much!
