Andrew,

I would like to thank you for this post.  I, too, have been having 
difficulties in my marriage.  I have rekindled my tuning/tech career in the 
last couple of years and have found that it is tremendously therapeutic to do 
this kind of work with my hands and mind while struggling with the emotional 
difficulties of this situation.  I'm sure your friend is appreciative in just 
having you there to listen and offer him the opportunity to share in 
something that you love doing.
