I have a sample of some stuff which I believe is called Hydulignum.  Very hard
and dense.  I don't know what the damping properties are like.  It's been in
use in industry for some decades I believe.  Might make an interesting rim
material if you could find a big enough press, or if you made your rim up in
small segments.
