Carl, I recently ran into the same problem on a (I forget the name) baby grand. The woman had two crystal paperweights on the lid. The crystal magnified the light from the room. The veneer was bleached through the finish. Not much can be done I'm sorry to say. Refinish. It sounds like your client would probably obsess over any touch up.
