I'm not sure if there is a connection, but this is the same finish (or one
very similar) that was applied to the Grotrian-Steinweg plates back in,
what, the 1960s and 1970s?--before they were required to stop using the
"Steinweg" part of the name anyway. At the time it was touted as being
specially designed to better disperse the sound....
