>... I have sent 3 letters asking for my money, with the 3rd letter promising
>legal action if I still received no resopnse.

Based on your post I would speculate the attitudinal content of those
letters was way over the top, especially the 3rd one. That's pretty
much shooting one's self in the foot whether you are prepared to back
it up or not.

>Option fuggetaboutit isn't really an option for me, since no one has EVER
>let me slide on a bill that _I_ owed to them.

You could make a huge demonstration, be the first to let it slide.
While that's customarily too much to ask for most people, it really
allows for tremendous leverage in future business dealings and does
go well with the soul.

>...One angry Italian,

Resolving the angry part would be the first necessary step in
reconciling such a matter. And for it to get this far suggests that
there is much more to why such a thing occurred to begin with.

It would be wise to carefully re-examine all the reasons and motives
within yourself why this has happened, and see if it isn't just
possible that you are partly responsible for this experience.

Admission goes along way towards understanding how to resolve a situation.
