I think it was Conklin and the Baldwin folks who first did research in this
direction, and found unisons "sounded" best when they were a bit off perfect.
As I remember they were pretty far from beatless in any sense of the word.
Course the definition for what sounded best was as subjective as it gets. 

Then there was the essay about string coupling which documents the sustain
characterstics of very slightly detuned unisons. We are talking on the order of
a 10th of a bps or something I believe.

I was not aware that Laroy did any significant work in this area.
